Fuel-efficient routing

How it works
In addition to showing the fastest route, Google Maps will also display the one that's most fuel or energy efficient, if it doesn't happen to also be the fastest. With just a few taps, you can see the relative fuel or energy savings and time difference between the two routes and choose the one that works best for you. Fuel-efficient routing uses AI to suggest routes that have fewer hills, less traffic, and constant speeds with the same or similar ETA.
The most efficient route varies based on what type of engine you have. For example, diesel engines are usually more efficient at higher speeds than petrol or gas engines, while hybrid and electric vehicles perform better in stop-and-go traffic.
That’s why drivers can now select their engine type, too — gas, diesel, hybrid, or electric — in order to get the best route and most accurate fuel or energy efficiency estimates.
This technology is made possible thanks to insights from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and data from the European Environment Agency. By pairing this information with Google Maps driving trends, we developed advanced machine learning models trained on the most popular engine types in a given region. Adding to existing availability in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Egypt, we’ll soon roll out fuel-efficient routing in Google Maps to India and Indonesia. Plus, in these two new countries, we’re including fuel-efficient routes for two-wheelers to help even more people travel more sustainably.

Since launching in October 2021, we estimate fuel-efficient routing has helped prevent more than 2.4 million metric tons of CO2e emissions — the equivalent of taking approximately 500,000 fuel-based cars off the road for a year.1
Global searches for how to save fuel when driving increased by 60% from 2022-2023.
1 Google uses an AI prediction model to estimate the expected fuel or energy consumption for each route option when users request driving directions. We identify the route that we predict will consume the least amount of fuel or energy. If this route is not already the fastest one and it offers meaningful energy and fuel savings with only a small increase in driving time, we recommend it to the user. To calculate enabled emissions reductions, we tally the fuel usage from the chosen fuel-efficient routes and subtract it from the predicted fuel consumption that would have occurred on the fastest route without fuel-efficient routing and apply adjustments for factors such as: CO2e factors, fleet factors, well-to-wheels factors, and powertrain mismatch factors. We then input the estimated prevented emissions into the EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator to calculate equivalent cars off the road for a year. The cumulative figure covers estimated emissions prevented after fuel-efficient routing was launched, from October 2021 through September 2023. Enabled emissions reductions estimates include inherent uncertainty due to factors that include the lack of primary data and precise information about real-world actions and their effects. These factors contribute to a range of possible outcomes, within which we report a central value.

Low emission zone alerts

How it works
Cities around the world have established low emission zones — areas that restrict polluting vehicles like certain diesel cars or cars with specific emissions stickers — to help keep the air clean.
To support these efforts, alerts can help drivers better understand when they’ll be navigating through one of these zones in select markets. You can quickly know if your vehicle is allowed in the area, choose an alternative mode of transportation, or take another route.

Glanceable directions

How it works
See live ETAs and where to make your next turn, without unlocking your phone or using the comprehensive navigation mode.
And with recent UI updates, cyclists can find the best option for them, including routes that are the fastest, shortest, include the most bike lanes, or have the fewest hills.
To help make cycling easier for more people, we’ve been working with local governments to ensure Google Maps shows up-to-date cycling routes.
For example, this year, we collaborated with organizations like Transport for London to add hundreds of kilometers of new bike lane data to Maps. Thanks to insights from these organizations, we’ve been able to prioritize cycling on safer, quieter roads, and these updates are now available to cities around the world.
We’re also showing new coloring on bike routes that show where bike lanes are, so you know what to expect at a glance.
In total, these changes are improving the journeys of more than 60 million people who come to Maps every month for cycling directions.

Shop for more efficient appliances

How it works
To help with the clean energy transition, we’re working to provide more information about sustainable options for home energy. Making sense of the options can be overwhelming, and people often need a new system on short notice, like when a boiler breaks in the middle of winter or an air conditioning unit stops working during a record-breaking heatwave. To make it easier for people looking for more sustainable heating and cooling options for their homes, we’re updating our Search experience to show energy efficiency information and financial incentives when people search terms like "heat pumps" or "air conditioning".
For example, when you search for energy-intensive products like furnaces, dishwashers or water heaters, suggestions in the Shopping tab will help narrow your search to more sustainable options. Find an Energy Star ® certified dishwasher, or an induction cooktop instead of a stove.
This is available now in the US and France, thanks to data from EnergyStar, Energy.gov, and the International Energy Agency. We’ll bring it to more people in Europe soon.

Understand your car-buying choices

How it works
For people shopping for an EV, it’s now even easier to understand the costs associated with buying a new vehicle thanks to new insights in Search. In the U.S., when people search for terms like “best electric cars,” they can quickly compare prices, battery range and discover models. They can also find federal government incentives for qualifying vehicles in the U.S., with German and French national incentives coming soon.
We’re also adding an updated Fuel Cost Calculator to electric and fuel-based car results to help drivers understand the cost of charging compared with filling up at the pump. This is available now in 21 countries around the world.
Our new battery range explorer shows how far drivers can go with a specific model car on a single charge. Now, when you search for an EV, you’ll get a visualization of how far you can go on a charge, specific to that model. We’ll even show how much battery you’d have upon arrival. You can also enter your own destination—maybe a favorite vacation spot or friend’s home—and, if it’s a really long trip, we’ll show how many charges are needed along the way. This prediction takes into account factors like elevation change and speed limits. These battery range insights roll out soon in the U.S. and in Europe early next year.

More sustainable choices when you travel

How it works
We’re also working to make long distance travel more sustainable.
One of the ways we’re doing this is by helping people find alternatives to flying. For example, say you searched for flights from Madrid to Barcelona. That’s the most-traveled air route in Europe, but the high-speed rail option is only an hour longer than the shortest flight. When considering time, price and carbon emissions, rail can often be the better choice.
Soon, we'll show relevant train routes when people search for flights in Google Search, so travelers can better understand all their options.
We also work with academic experts and providers across the industry to help travelers find flights that emit less carbon dioxide. Google is working with the travel industry, academics, and travel providers to develop the Travel Impact Model (TIM), a methodology for estimating per-traveler flight emissions. By helping people choose greener options, this publicly available model can help drive change in the travel industry.

Support a clean energy future with Nest Renew

How it works
We launched Nest Renew in the United States to help individuals automatically shift their energy consumption to times of day when local grid electricity is cleaner or less expensive.
That’s the thinking behind powerful features like Energy Shift, which makes small adjustments to your Nest thermostat throughout the day to automatically take advantage of cleaner or less expensive energy.1 Every five minutes, Energy Shift gathers local power grid emissions forecasts across the country. Then, using these forecasts, our algorithms look for opportunities where running a home’s heating or cooling slightly earlier or later would result in taking advantage of cleaner energy, and automatically adjust your thermostat accordingly. This is all done with very small changes from scheduled temperatures (generally less than one degree Fahrenheit). The changes are so subtle that you won’t notice and will stay just as comfortable, but of course, you are in control and can manually adjust your thermostat at any time.
Anyone in the continental U.S. with a 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat, the Nest Thermostat E or the newest Nest Thermostat connected to a Google account can join Nest Renew and start making better use of clean energy in their area with Energy Shift.
If you want to extend your impact even further, you can upgrade to Nest Renew Premium for only $10 a month, which matches the fossil fuel electricity used in your home with enough clean energy to cover the average U.S. household. This is done with purchases of renewable energy credits from U.S. wind and solar.2
Users can also access features like impact reports and the Energy Impact Program, which lets you help direct Nest Renew funds to nonprofit partners working in communities around the country on a range of programs supporting energy equity and environmental justice. These programs include efforts to bring lower-cost and efficient energy options to communities that spend disproportionately on energy as well as offering scholarships and career advancements to in the clean energy industry.

As of December 2022, we estimate that Energy Shift has already helped Nest Renew users collectively prioritize cleaner energy usage for over 110 million hours.3
2 A Renew Premium $10/month subscription is required. Learn how this is done with renewable energy credits (RECs). Nest Renew will be purchasing renewable energy credits (RECs) from wind and solar plants in the United States. The majority of these RECs will come from our flagship project Bethel Wind in Castro County, TX, with the remainder coming from US solar.

Nest thermostats

How it works
From being smart enough to turn down automatically when nobody’s home with Eco Temperatures to uncovering ways to save more with subtle adjustments to your schedule using Seasonal Savings or Savings Finder, Nest’s family of thermostats offers intelligent features to make it simpler to save on heating and cooling.1
From 2011 to 2022, Nest thermostats are estimated to have helped customers cumulatively save more than 113 billion kWh of energy2—equivalent to preventing an estimated 36 million tCO2e emissions3—more than double Portugal’s annual electricity consumption.4
In 2022 alone, Nest thermostats are estimated to have helped customers save more than 26 billion kWh of energy globally—more energy than Google used in the same year.2

The average US household in a single-family home spends about 53 percent of its energy-related expenditures on heating and cooling, which adds up to about $92 billion per year nationwide.
2 These energy savings are calculated based on the typical percentage of heating and cooling savings found in real-world studies of the Nest thermostats. To calculate the total savings, we apply these savings percentages to the actual heating and cooling hours of all Nest thermostats. Energy savings are an estimate, not a guarantee that any individual user will save energy.
